Arch Backdrop and Hanging Banner Sizes

Arches and hanging banners do the two jobs a flat wall cannot: one frames the people standing under it, the other is seen over the top of a crowded hall. Both are sized by rules of thumb that nobody writes down. Here they are.

Arch backdrop sizes

An arch is sized by what has to pass through it or stand under it, not by the wall behind it.

  • Photo and press arches: 4ft to 6ft wide, 7ft to 8ft high at the crown. Wide enough for two or three people, low enough that the crown appears in the shot and frames them.
  • Event entrances: 8ft to 10ft wide, 8ft to 10ft high. One person passes comfortably in each direction.
  • Show aisle entrances: 10ft to 20ft wide. Sized to the aisle the hall has given you — check the floor plan, because aisle widths are fixed and an arch that narrows one will not be approved.

The crown height is the measurement that matters. Measure the clear height at the centre, not the overall height of the structure, and allow 6 inches over the tallest person who will walk through.

Arch shapes and what each is for

Round (semicircular) is the classic photo arch — soft, symmetrical, forgiving of where people stand. Tapered narrows toward the top and reads as taller than it is, useful in a low hall. Open arch has no filled centre, so the backdrop behind it shows through and the arch acts as a frame rather than a surface. Flat square and door arches give you a rectangular opening with maximum printable area, which suits a sponsor wall better than a photo position.

All of them are built from curved aluminium sections with a silicone-edge fabric graphic tensioned over the face, so the print follows the curve without rippling at the inside radius. Freestanding versions use weighted bases for hard floors.

Hanging banner sizes

A hanging banner is sized by the stand beneath it and the hall's rigging rules, which are set per show. Check the exhibitor manual first — the drape limit, the maximum weight per rigging point and whether rigging is permitted at all.

  • Over a 10x10: 5ft to 6ft across. Larger looks disproportionate and often breaches the footprint rule, which usually requires the banner to sit within the stand's own boundary.
  • Over a 10x20: 8ft to 10ft across, or a rectangular banner running the long axis.
  • Over a 20x20 island: 10ft to 16ft across. This is where tiered and multi-level shapes earn their cost.

Hanging height is normally measured to the bottom edge of the banner, and 16ft to 20ft from the floor is typical. Below about 14ft it is inside the visual clutter of the hall; above 22ft most halls will not permit it.

Hanging banner shapes

Round, square, triangle, tapered and tiered circular are the standard shapes. Round reads the same from every direction, which is why it is the default over an island. Triangle gives you three distinct faces, so three messages, but each is smaller. Square suits a rectangular footprint. Tiered shapes add height without adding width, useful where the footprint rule limits your span.

Print every face. A banner with one printed side is invisible from half the hall, and the saving is small.

Where rigging is not allowed

Plenty of halls and most hotel ballrooms prohibit rigging entirely. A collapsible display tower does the same job from the floor — counter height up to over 10ft, printed on all faces, lit or unlit, breaking down into a single wheeled case and standing up without tools. Place towers at the corners of an island or at the front edges of an inline stand.

Construction and materials

Hanging banner frames are lightweight aluminium rings or sections with a tensioned fabric print pulled over them; the whole assembly folds into a carry bag. Arches use curved aluminium with silicone-edge graphics. Prints are dye-sublimated onto flame-retardant 240g tension fabric, or 200g backlit fabric where the structure is lit. Rigging points are fitted to the hall's requirement — tell us the show and we will fit accordingly.

Lead time, shipping and warranty

Send the measurements and the artwork and a 3D mock-up comes back within 24 hours showing the finished shape before anything is printed. Spans are made to the opening you are working with rather than cut down from a standard size. Production runs to a 48-hour lead time, shipping to mainland USA is included, and hardware carries a two-year warranty. Rigging itself is a show service billed by the hall.
