Step and Repeat Banner Sizes and Setup
A step and repeat is the only backdrop whose success is measured in photographs rather than footfall. That changes what matters: the size has to suit the number of people standing in front of it, the logo repeat has to survive cropping, and the surface has to be flat enough that a flash does not find a crease. Here are the dimensions and the practical details.
Standard step and repeat sizes
Four sizes cover almost every use.
- 8ft wide by 8ft high. One to three people. The usual choice for a conference room, a sponsor wall or a small press position.
- 10ft wide by 8ft high. Three to five people. The most ordered size, because it photographs a small group without forcing anyone to the edge.
- 16ft wide by 8ft high. Six to eight people, or a wider camera position. Usually built as a modular run rather than a single panel.
- 20ft wide by 8ft high. A red-carpet line, or a backdrop that has to survive a crowd moving across it.
Height is almost always 8ft. Shorter than that and the top of the frame appears in the shot behind anyone over six feet tall. Taller and you are paying for fabric that the camera never sees.
How large should the logos be
The question people actually mean is "will the logo be readable in the photo". Two rules handle it.
First, size the logo so the mark is 6 to 10 inches across on the backdrop. Smaller and it blurs at typical press-photo resolution; larger and you fit too few repeats, so a cropped shot may contain only part of one logo.
Second, stagger the rows. A straight grid means a person standing in front can block a whole column of logos. Offsetting every other row by half a repeat guarantees that at least one complete mark appears beside each head in the frame.
Leave the bottom 2ft to 3ft quieter than the rest. That band is almost always obscured by the people being photographed, so putting a second logo or a sponsor tier there wastes it.
Fabric or vinyl
This is the decision that shows up in the pictures. A vinyl banner is printed on film, rolled for transport, and it keeps the memory of that roll. Under a flash the creases catch the light and the laminate throws glare straight back at the lens.
A tension fabric step and repeat is printed by dye sublimation onto flame-retardant 240g fabric with a silicone bead stitched to the edge. The bead seats into a channel milled in the aluminium frame and pulls the print drum-tight. The surface is matte, so it absorbs flash rather than reflecting it, and the fabric folds into the case without taking a crease. It is also machine washable, which matters on a backdrop that gets handled by a hundred people in an evening.
Setting one up
The frame assembles by hand without tools. Lay the sections out, join them with the internal connectors, stand the assembled frame on its weighted feet, then seat the graphic — start at the top corners, work down the sides, finish along the bottom. Two people, 15 to 30 minutes for an 8x8 or 10x8.
Three things that go wrong on site: the floor is not level, so bring the adjustable feet rather than assuming; the backdrop is set flat against a wall, which means no one can stand far enough in front of it, so pull it 3ft to 4ft forward; and the lighting is directly overhead, which casts a shadow of each person onto the logos behind them. Light from the front at roughly 45 degrees, from both sides if you can.
Reusing the frame
The frame and the print are separate purchases. A new event means a new fabric skin seated into the frame you already own, which is what makes a step and repeat economical across a season of dates rather than a single night. We print replacement silicone edge graphics to the dimensions of frames already in service, including frames we did not supply — send the frame size and the channel profile.
Lead time, shipping and warranty
Send artwork and a 3D mock-up comes back within 24 hours, before print. Production runs to a 48-hour lead time. Shipping to mainland USA is included in the price and the hardware carries a two-year warranty.
Next step
Browse step and repeat backdrops and tension fabric walls, buy the frame on its own, or order a replacement graphic for a frame you already have.
